This work is from an ongoing project exploring home state of Florida and the unreal scenes there.
I began this work in response to how Florida simultaneously feels like both a dream and a nightmare.
Florida is brimming with retirees and reliant on tourists who find paradise here. At the same time, it’s also full of people who work in these hotel and country club industries. Yet something in common we all have is our interaction with the natural environment, especially water. The past few years have been a strange time where politics literally shaped the landscape. The tides are getting increasingly higher as buildings expand skylines and roughly 1,000 people move to Florida everyday. This state is like a drowning fantasy.
These constant changes made me want to document my home, as well as the people here, as everything goes through time. I also want to share a perspective different from the typical “Florida Man” headlines people see. Growing up in Florida it was the quirky details in life, the perpetual humidity, and even the way light shines that was distinctive to this place. This is where I grew up. This is a collective portrait of how I see my home.
